Take off Into Film!

The rocket ship has launched – the new charity Into Film has taken its first steps in a new initiative to get UK kids, well, into film! And it’s already picking up plenty of passengers.

Hannie Kirkham reports...

On 5th February, Into Film, a new UK-wide film learning programme was launched. Working with the BFI, it aims to put film at the heart of children and young people’s learning, contributing to their educational, cultural, creative and personal development. Its ambitious and inclusive ‘See, Think, Make. Imagine’ programme seeks to make a step change in film learning for 5-19 year-olds, making all aspects of film accessible in a way that only a privileged few young people have known to date.

Available to every school in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, Into Film aims to provide all young people, regardless of their background or ability, with opportunities to learn through film and about film.  Training and resources will be provided to give teachers the tools to support engagement at all levels and promote the use of film as a powerful education resource.

Into Film was launched at Westminster Academy by actor Eddie Redmayne, Into Film Chair Eric Fellner (co-chair of Working Title Films), Into Film trustees filmmaker Beeban Kidron OBE and award-winning retired headteacher Sir Alasdair Macdonald and Chief Executive Paul Reeve.

16 yr-old Josh from Greenhill School in Tenby, explained how Into Film has already had an impact on him: You just don’t have to imagine what it’s like anymore. Being allowed to explore the film industry leaves me hungry for more each time… it helps you feel proud to be part of something and gives you a sense of ownership – I’m not just a punter but a participant, an insider!

Supported by the British Film Institute, together with funding from the film industry and a number of other sources, Into Film incorporates the legacy and staff of two leading film education charities, FILMCLUB and First Light, building on their experience and success in delivering programmes of significant scale and reach to children and young people across the UK.
