Currently issues such as the privatisation of Channel 4, the review of the future of the Young Audiences Content Fund and the BBC mid-Charter review all impact on how well-funded public service content will be going forward. And this impacts on the media lives of children and young people.
Looking forward, the migration of the younger audience is one of the key concerns amongst public service organisations, regulators and government. “Recapturing” the young with competitive, compelling content, whether that means drawing them back to conventional services or approaching them “where they are” – entails costs. Costs which in many cases the market alone is unable to fulfill.
